What is greenbikesnorthtahoe?

A bicycle sharing program focused on environmental responsibility, community awareness and personal well-being.

Who will greenbikesnorthtahoe serve?

The project currently considers those who live in and around Truckee, California. Truckee will serve as the model due to the number of people who commute from its many outlying neighborhoods and other places including Reno, Nevada.

Bicycle sharing has its roots in urbane areas where traffic, parking, and density are typically seen as negative characteristics. Thru-traffic in Truckee is highly concentrated due to its linear nature and proximity to I-80, Hwy 89 and Hwy 267. Parking space within Downtown Truckee is limited by geographic constraints as well as the presence of both the railroad and the aforementioned thoroughfares. While Truckee's density entertains mixed notions of Wild West sprawl, efficient restraint, and urban foresight; all things considered the town is bike-able end-to-end.

The project is poised to minimize the demand of one's personal vehicle on a daily basis, provide an integral link to the community in which we live and incorporate personal well being into a daily routine.

How will greenbikesnorthtahoe work?

The project is envisioned to work with volunteer-run hubs where a few, lucky local businesses will host a Neighborhood Node (N2). The Neighborhood Nodes will stretch from Donner Lake's West End to Truckee's Airport Business Park on its Eastern edge. At approximately 9 miles in length, the core of Truckee may be reached within a 15-30-45 minute ride depending on one's conditioning.

Community members and visitors may register to participate at a Neighborhood Node. Members may then borrow a bicycle from any Neighborhood Node to run an errand, visit a friend, or to simply ride around. Bicycles shall be equipped with fenders, lights and a basket to accommodate a variety of needs. Following use the bicycles may be returned to any N2 location within operating hours. Similar programs strive to achieve 10-15 uses per bike per day; however, frequency of use may vary depending on weather and actual travel patterns. A free, pilot program will begin at the end of August.

Currently it is undecided whether membership will be offered annually or for a shorter time commitment to align with the Truckee/Tahoe seasons.

Membership fees are planned to be minimal; in addition, donations are welcome. Non-profit status for greenbikesnorthtahoe is planned; however, it has yet to be achieved.
